FI is not a must for a stunt bike. I ran a 99 R1 and a 98 900RR before going to a 636. Only time they would shut off is when I was on the bar and NOT on the gas. I could do 2nd gear scrapes for the whole lot (about 800ft) and the 900 would pull fine.
Not sure if there is an oil pick up issue with that year gixxer... I used to run my oil to the top of the oil window on both the older bikes. Not so much with the 636 (i don't run the clean air mod).
