well im no chevy expert but 12.4 doesnt sound like enough from the alternator. does it go up at all when you rev the engine

a fully charged battery should have 12.6 volts. it only having 12.4 volts means it is not charging which is why he made this thread.\r\n

\r\n \r\n looking at the alternator from the back of it mine is numbered 1 and 2 at the plug. you need to have power at the number 2 side of the plug which is the futherest from the charging lug on the back.\r\n

\r\n \r\n The starter solenoid can cause charging problems... as in the solenoid allows "start" and "run" with a pass through for charging. When running, you should have 14 volts at the battery. Fords are usually the only ones that have a remote starter solenoid that allows you to arch the start side with a screw driver and turn the engine over. 90% of Chevy\'s have that solenoid on the starter. I don\'t recall if the 84\'s have a ballast resistor or not, but that can also cause charging issues. Again, I don\'t know if 84\'s have them or not... it\'s not fuel injected so I\'m assuming you don\'t have a points style distributor so that would probably mean you don\'t have a ballast resistor. Check each component 1 by 1. Battery, alt, starter solenoid. If all check out then I would start looking at potential shorts. Also... before you go crazy on anything ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GROUND WIRE AT THE BATTERY. I don\'t know how many times I\'ve seen cars NOT charging properly b/c the terminals are either corroded or not tight. Take the time to clean all terminals and use a wire brush to scuff and clean the terminals. Go get yourself some $4 ends and put some new ones on just to be sure. It\'s a cheap way to eliminate a problem\r\n

\r\n \r\n I have new terminals, new cables, new battery, new starter, new alternator... I have power to the alternator stud and to the red wire on the plug.. Im guessing it has to be a ground of some sort\r\n

\r\n \r\n ok so i do not have power to the key switched.. so im going to run the batt stud to the battery.. Do i unplug all the factory wires? or just leave everything and just tie in the jumper??\r\n

\r\n \r\n so what is the deal, what have you got going on with it? if you run a jumper from the charge lug to the #2 terminal it should be charging. if it is not getting to the battery then you have a bad connection somewhere. you need to check the voltage at the 2 terminal. not just a test light but with a meter. give me a call and i will walk you through the testing process what i can over the phone.\r\n

\r\n \r\n You should get 14 to 16 out of the alt any thing less is below spec. i figure its a reman alt not a new one that could be the problem some times you will go thru 4 or 5 before you get a good working reman alt. Double check all your grounds 9 times out of 10 its a bad ground also try replaceing your charge wire from the alt to battary some times the inside of a wire will burn up and you will have volts at the alt but lose them at the turm due to amp lose thru the wire. Thats my but ive only been a tech for the last 10 years \r\n
