\r\n \r\n since its a 84 is there a solenoid on the fender somewhere that goes between the battery and starter? if so try that\r\n

\r\n \r\n solenoid is mounted on starter.. Has a 350. Starter is new.. I dont understand how i have power running thru the alternator but its not charging.. BTW this is the 2nd good alternator i have tried\r\n

\r\n \r\n the solenoid im talking about is separate from the starter, it may be covered by wires... some older truck have em some dont, try checking all your grounds and get a wiring diagram for your truck and follow that\r\n

\r\n \r\n Sounds like a bad ground or the inside of the wire from alt to bat has a break.\r\n

\nwhat voltage do you see at the back of the alternator? what voltage do you see at the battery with the engine running?\r\n

well im no chevy expert but 12.4 doesnt sound like enough from the alternator. does it go up at all when you rev the engine\r\n

\r\n \r\n the alternator on that truck has an internal regulator. the only thing you need for it to charge is power going to one of the wires at the plug in on top. when you turn the switch on it should send power to one of these wires which energizes the field to start charging. when i install one of these alternators on older cars i just run a jumper from from the charge lug on the back of the alternator to the field side of the plug on top. if you have power going in the plug and it is not charging with the engine running then the alternator is bad. new stands for Never Ever Works.\r\n
