f4i ignition advance?
#1
im a beginner currently learning. i have a f4i with a -1/54. ive been riding the lot for a bit and seem to be getting back to bp, but very choppy on the gas and just cant even it out. im at 3500 idle and it seems like its just not pulling enough when im at bp to just work with the brake. i really dont want to crank my sprockets up cuz i enjoy riding the street as well. so my next thought would be to advance the timing. i have somebosy that makes 2 degree and 4 degree advance. just wondering the deal with these. should i try a 2 degree? im afraid a 4 degree might cause pinging or damage motor.

just looking for advice

If your bike is having problem keeping you in idle at 3500, then your bike has a problem beyond the advancer. In order for your bike to pull you, you have to be high enough rocking actual idle past bp. If you say you're chopping the throttle to stay at "bp" then in reality you're not even at bp. When you keep your throttle open at a certain position maintaining the same speed and your bike not screaming for it's life then you know you're at balance point. Hope this help. By the way I just added the +4 about two weeks ago and I must say, it def pulls stronger.

+4 is the way to go..... added mine like a week now, and it pull like a 636. i suggest you bump the idle to 4G, and drop the front -2. every 1 down adds 3 to the back, so you will be better with that... hope this helps you out....

Try cranking your idle up to 4k. I'm the same sprocket setup as you, -1 front and 54t rear. For me, being at 3.5k is way harder than 4k for idle wheelies - I've stalled and mousetrapped with idle at 3.5k but never stalled with idle at 4k and ever since I got Griffy's Magic star (timing advancer) I haven't stalled the engine at all. After trying your idle @ 4,000rpms, if you still want more low-end power either get a Magic Star from Andrew G. or get whatever ignition timing advancer you were looking at.

Something else that might help is an exhaust that will give some back pressure - that will give you a gain in low-end power.

I just put my magic star on last weekend and it's fuckin amazing. With the Magic star and the Nardeen saggy ass fix the F4i is becoming equal to the 636.
