Could be the gear itself, or the shift drum or shift fork. hard to say until you pull it apart

^+1 my trans was doing the same thing, I tore it apart yesterday and found out the shift fork had contact marks on it and the fork rod was also a little bent.
Its alot of work, you gotta remove the motor, drain it, flip it over, pull all the covers off, remove the clutch, split the case, find the problem, find replacement parts,
put em in, put it all back together, manually shift thru the gears, finish putting it back together, put the motor in the bike and pray it fucking works!
I was lucky and found a blown motor, so i got a sorta free trans. I also have a friend that has a bike shop and helped me. Without this, I probably would have just double shifted into 4th or bought a new motor.

Sounds like I got a lot of work to do on my old motor if I want to use it again... Same thing... And why 3rd gear?

Take your time, and pay attention to where everything goes. youll also have to get the torque specs and tightening order to get the case back together correctly.
If you got any mechanical ability you should be able to do it, (I was lucky and found some good help). You can also use your spare trans for a reference if you get stuck.
