So yeah I'm done with high school. I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I want to weld. I do have experience as a welder.
Now I'd like to attend technical school, and some probably other college courses like math, and science and I do want to serve in the Air Force for these reasons:
-I want a better education, and the Air Force seems like the best branch that offers the best education benefits such as, Air Force Tuition Assistance
-I want to travel the world a bit, but only for short periods. Air Force has some of the shortest deployments
-I can't afford to put myself through school as a civilian, and I don't want to get myself in debt with loans.
Now I'm kind of job locked. I'd like to get in Aircraft Metals Technology, but I hear Air Force already has enough people coming to them for enlistment and they tend to turn away people that want a specific job in the Air Force. But this job is the one I'd find really enjoyable for me while being in active duty. Hell, I'd re-enlist if I like it enough.
I haven't talked to a recruiter yet, was looking to go within the next week or two. Should I just explain my situation and see what the recruiter thinks? Or not even bother telling him what job I want, cause I hear that's all handled down at MEPS.

you have an pretty romantic/idealistic view of the military. from what I read it says that job includes writing CAD/CAM designs. even if this were done regularly (gotta assume such parts are oem or contracted out), a private would not be doing most of the tasks, so grab a mop!
as for travel, its not like youll be going to brazil or germany TDY all the time. those deployments are deployments, probably not tdy's.
as for loans, unless youre stationed near a good school, youll prob go online, in which case your per semester cap will max every class, so TA ends up covering only 1 semester a year. (i took 9 courses this year and paid for 3, 10 class/yr is being a full time student).
youll choose a job before you go to meps the 2nd time.

Have you taken a practice asvab? do you know what score you need to get the mos you want?

thanks ben for the info.
working a mop in the Air Force sounds better than what i'm currently doing right now. besides, you head to tech school after basic. you have got to learn a few things there that can get you to do something besides cleaning, right?
fyi, I took a class for CAD. Designed a connecting rod, and a few small 3d
engine parts.
for travel, i know it's not going to be like paradise. but it beats staying at the shit town I've lived in for the past 5 years with my parents.
and well then would it be better to do college work after I'm done with active duty? using the G.I. Bill and any other benefits toward college.
right now, I'm just looking to change my lifestyle, and get on with the next stage with my life. most of my friends are just out partying and working at fast food restaurants. not really giving two shits about what's important right now. i feel like i can do better than that.
as for the ASVAB, it looks like a piece of cake. I took physics, chemistry, algebra 2, and some trigonometry courses in highschool. and work on my own truck and dirt bike. with a little studying i should get a pretty high score.

totally shoulda listened to my mom. only a yr to go though. next duty station (bragg) is an hr from home though.
btw dude you do NOT want to go to korea. im stationed on a AF base (im army) in seoul and its purty lame.
