I don't know man, all I know is my buddy's Jeep does the same thing, gets louder with RPMs, doubles sound when he turns, and just whines like a bitch when he's just driving. Could be the pulleys in your vehicle, won't know until you check it out. I was just saying that since you said your power steering pump was already fucked up, go ahead and change that first and it might fix it.

I pulled the serpentine belt off and the idler pulley and tennsioner pulley were both shot. Replaced them, but that still didn't get rid of the noise. I am not gonna buy a ps pump because this one still works perfectly fine just makes a little bit of noise, I will wait for it to fail to do that.
Also the new pulley has an ever so slight squeal every now and again.

I just replaced the PS pump on my 7.3 and it was only $60. Had a mad whine and groan to it but its good now. The problem with diesels is that if the pump goes out, you loose the brakes too.

would yours do it just going straight though? Also the ps resevoir has a filter in it. I might try changing the res w/ filter since rockauto has it for 11 dollars.

Yeah it got to the point where i would fire the damn thing up at idle and it would whine. I also heard there is a lucas additive for power steering that helps a lot. I didnt try it because for $60 I just replaced the pump and called it a day.

yea if my pump was only 60 bucks I would replace it as well. The cheapest I found online is around 160 plus shipping. Kinda steep to just get rid of a noise.

Bimmerforums.com will help you SO much! I owned two e34s, and know a lot about them because of that site. Also, for BMWs, use bavauto.com and pelicanparts.com. thats where I found the cheapest stuff.
Got any pictures of the e46? I prefer the e36, just because it's a more classic look IMO
