How do you start out?

Im new to all of this so help me out ! I see my dude having all this fun on his bike and so i would like to join in on it... SO what are some tips.. and how do you get over the nervous feeling the first time you ride? I attempted to drive his f2 one time and we almost went over a cliff.. needless to say i was only on the bike for maybe 10 seconds and that kind of freaked me out so i havent been on it since ... help please.
