You should take a mechanic stethoscope and pinpoint the problem before disassembling. I bought one of those mechanic stethoscope from harbor freight. or use a long screwdriver if not. It does sound like a top end problem but it could be the bottom end as well. Do a compression test then a leakdown test as well, You could check the valve clearances also make sure there all within specs
