Products that are being tested include hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers and perfluorochemical compounds. They can do some of the work of red blood cells, such as carrying oxygen to tissues, but cannot replace the many functions that human blood does. Of the oxygen-carrying compounds that are being tested in U.S. clinical trials, none has been approved by the FDA as of 2009. Most blood substitutes are experimental and are rarely used.

\nBlood Salvage, and volume expanders can be used, but there are several stipulations with these: If the blood is not salvagable, or if you need blood cells, instead of just expansion to keep from going into shock, being just a few.

\nIm just trying to understand.......you would use animal blood, but not human? Is that just because the (very slight) risk of BBP diseases in human blood? Quote:
