I've been shooting for about six years, this is my take on it - just my two cents-

I'd buy a
Glock - G17, G19, or G26 (all 9mm):
-cheap to buy ($600new / $350-$400 used) & cheap to own
-rounds are cheap (~$22 per 100 if you buy instead of reload)
-very consistant, and definately accurate for the price
-easy to clean and maintian
-parts are very affordable if needed
-lots of accessories
-great resale value.... because people dont ever wanna get rid of em ;-)
-the G26 and G29 are my personal favorites for concelled carry and are both very fun to shoot.


OTHER GOOD-FAIR BRANDS:
-SIG (extremely well built, great ergonomics, but kinda pricey)
-Kimber (again pricey but very dependable)
-ParaOrdinance (all around decent handguns)
-HiPoint (very very cheap and rummored to be dependable, but you get what you pay for I think)

Brands to watch out for:
-Taurus (affordable but very problematic for beginners, some guns can't shoot certain rounds and their mechanisms need to be kept very clean)
-Ruger (they make great rifles, but make overpriced, ugly, awkward handguns)


I recommend a .22 or 9mm for target practice because the rounds are cheaper than 10mm, .40 S&W, .45, .380 etc
but if you buy .22 you better not need that gun for anything but target practice.
