To give a better description of what happens. Lowering the front end brings the wheels closer together the closer together they are the higher the balance point will be. For an experiment try balancing a broom stick by staring only at your hand. Then try it again but look at the other end of the stick. It will balance better the further you look up the stick. Same basic principle. If your forks were 10ft long the balance point would be substantially lower.
