You mentioned you occasionally bomb the road with smoke, this means you are either getting oil in the airbox [bad] or you already have the clean air mod and the oil is going out your exhaust[good].
As far as the light goes it means you don't have oil near the sending unit, the pick up is much lower than the oil level sending unit.
