i did it while the bike was upright without removing anything.
first thing i did was grind off the rivet for the cable mount and removed the mount. then i used a donor arm and cut the top plate and mount off. then i drilled a hole in the donor plate and used a nut and bolt to secure it on top of the original arms(widened) rivet hole. tightened the nut down and welded the backside. done. if i remember right i kept as much material as i was able from the donor shaft plate. the bolt and nut just clear the bolt on the cover. i think it added between 1/2 and 5/8" in length
