Here's a few things that may help you with shooting at night:
1.) Since the T3i will disable auto focus when focus can't be achieved. So in situations where it's dark, you'll actually need to turn off your auto focus in order to capture the shot. You can do this by switching the AF/MF switch on the lens to "MF".
2.) To prevent blur you'll need to mount the camera on a tripod.
3.) You'll definitely need the assistance of a flash to capture moving subjects at night.
