you want at least a 2.8 aperture lens for low light, 1.8, 1.4 and 1.2 are even better, although 2.8 is lowest most zoom lens' will go. At least with canon.

Lower aperture, higher ISO, let as much light as possible into the cam.

The other alternative is shoot with a flash.
