GI vs Post 9/11

so ive been looking up the differences between the two, but am hesitant to switch from mgib to post 9/11 because i cannot figure out the army's motive for encouraging the switch. I see AFN commercials all the time telling us how and why to change over; but wouldnt the military want to keep people from switching to save money? i know it is designed to encourage enlistment, but you enlist under the mgib, so y bother getting people to change over if they already enlisted? does anyone have experience with the post 9/11 that could shed some light?

There is a shit load of info at www.va.gov. But the short version from what I understand. Is the difference in the monthly pay based on zip code of the school you go to. I am currently in process of EASing from the marine corp after 9 years on active duty and all the info I have gotten is that it is personal preference between which one you choose to get. The post 911 bill will give you housing allowance based on what the zip code of the school you go to is and the Montgomery gi bill will give you a set amount. The difference is in where you live and the housing allowance amount you get for that zip code of your school. If your like me. And live in San Diego ca and get 2190 a month for bah it is better to go post 911. Because I would only get the set a mount of about 1100 for the Montgomery gi bill. The reverse applies if I was living in bum fuck Montana and the housing allowance was less than 1000 a month And the montgomery gi bill still paid me a flat rate of 1100. The only other difference is in the amount of time in which you have to use the benefits after you seperate. Something like 15 years for the Montgomery and 10 for the post 911. The Montgomery gi bill had the option to add to it when you first enlisted but you had to pay something like 1200 which will show in your LES if you have paid it. It gives you a few extra months of benefits but I think the max is something like 36 months. That's where the big differences are. The small differences are all over. Bu nothin major that will effect your pay and tuition fees. I have a bunch of info written down somewhere if you want more info PM me and I can let you know everything I know.

You can switch anytime while you are goin to school but once you make the switch you can't go back. If I could of done it over I would of tried out the GI bill and switched over if I didn't like it.

It really depends on the school zip code for me in San Diego getting paid 2000 bah vs the mgib 1300 bah the post was the better option and I transferred 10 to my wife. Since I don't plan on living somewhere like shit hole north Dakota where the mgib would pay me more than post

I've heard ppl making more off the normal gi bill because all the school funding is sent to them as well, but if they still have to pay for the classes, the money is still gone, so are they just doing something subverting like just dropping the class after the money comes?

like theres no honest way to have more money available to live off of either way, no?

i want to finish my degree, not looking for extra money, so not asking for tips to cheat, just which way gives more bah money

Gi will be best if u want more money. Why not use tuition assistance while ur in now? I used it and it was great while on active duty

i use TA now, but i take 3 classes a semester (12 week semesters) and embry riddle is private; costing 800 a course, since i do roughly 12 classes a yr my TA maxes out around 6 months in. i pay the remainder out of pocket but wanna start drawing off my GI. since ill be out in 1 1/2 yrs ill only need my gi bill for the remaining 30 credits ill have left by then for my BS. so using some now wont have much impact, but id like to take full time (5) classes once im out so i can get my degree sooner, but doing so would mean i wouldnt have time for a job, so the most bah i could get the better.

you can also use up the full Montgomery GI Bill and then switch to the Post 9/11 and get another 1 year out of that as well. (something along those lines)

with the post 9/11, to get full BAH, you have to be a full time student with majority of your classes on campus, distant learning/online classes will only get you half of the national average (which is about 680), but if you take 75% of the full time student requirements, you will get only 75% of your BAH for the zip code the school is in.

also with the post 9/11, you get 1k for books and supplies each year, and can get 1k for tutoring..not sure how to get that as i have not attempted it myself yet..

If you are a full time studetn 9/11 is better off IMO. Along with the area code consideration.
