The deal seems to be that they are trying to stop the leak without losing the well.
What they need to do is run a line down and set a really dense cement plug and completely stop the flow. It is possible to plug a well that is flowing. I've done it before on land more than once. Shouldn't be much different offshore.

They were talking about that yesterday, spraying thick mud and concrete (even golf balls, and tire shreds) into the holes. Hopefully it works, as they said it had never been done at that depth before.
