Contact Cement Bad For HT Moto Grip - pray4butter - 05-06-2013
I read through a number of threads trying to decide if I should buy HT Grip with the adhesive or use my own form of adhesive.
It appeared that the majority of people said that Weldwood Contact cement was the best way to go for a stronger more permanent bond to your gas tank. So that is the route I chose.
I'm not sure if Weldwood contact cement bonds well with certain types of paint and not so well with others? My tank was painted by an auto body shop with automotive grade paint and the painted tank had over a week to dry.
When I applied the contact cement to the tank and the HT grip you are supposed to let it dry for 15 minutes according to the instructions on the bottle so it can become tacky. Within just a few minutes of applying the contact cement it started reacting with the paint on the tank making it bubble, just like a paint thinner would.
I tried to put the HT grip on anyway because I wasn't sure what to do at that point and it appeared to be tacky or sticking. I put pressure on the grip for about 10 minutes around the different curves because HT material is fairly stiff. Everything seemed to be fine and bonded. Then I came back the next morning and the grip had basically ballooned or puffed out with big air bubbles between the grip and tank as if a gas was created from the contact cement reacting with the paint.
I peeled the grip off and I'm starting over with another adhesive, that sucked.

My only concern with sanding down the paint to bond straight to the metal, would be that the tank could still rust from water seeping through the foam.

the stuff from htmoto I never had to apply contact cement but when I got botners moto grip stuff which was like htmoto without the tacky stuff I used it and worked great............ but if I were you if you got a sweet painted tank I'd pay the htmoto price and not mess with the glues

i used Gorilla glue on mine, holds strong... but it had some downfalls... takes awhile to dry, so u gota hold the paddin on for awhile, but thats kind of expected with alot of glues. 2- the stuff expands as it drys, so it might not give u the cleanest look, but can be taken care off. and 3- the shit dries rock hard, so if u ever plan to take the paddin off, its stuck on the paint pretty good, but ur paint is already messed up so shouldnt be a big deal lol. but ive glued mine on about 6months ago and its still holdin strong.

I just did the weldwood contact cement 2 weeks ago and boy is that ht-moto on there now. Had a ht-moto 1" lip with 3m adhesive and that shit broke off mid frogger, scared the shit outa me for reals
. Cut the lip off and just used the ht-moto grip that was on the bottom part of the lip. After peeling off all the 3m adhesive (sucked) I applied the contact cement to JUST the grip and let it get tacky. Once tacky I applied it where the lip was and BOOM, instant adhesion with no paint degrading. Dont put that shit on paint wet, ONLY tacky and it will stick for a long ass time. Hope this helps,

I rattle canned my tank, then used the weldwood on it. The paint bubbled a little but I waited 15 and then slapped the ht moto on (I used the cement on the pad too) it stuck on just fine and is still sticking...
