954rr Street Build - ny450 - 01-24-2013

bored so im going to make a build thread maybe it will motivate me alittle bit to get out in the 10 degree weather and put in some work.

got the bike early this fall after getting bored of my f4i. wanted to try out something new after already having 3 or 4 636s, 6-8 f4i, a few supermotos, etc. i used to have a 929 before i got into real stunting and always missed that extra power so i figured id see if anything was for sale on craigslist. found this bike for a great deal, went out to queens to scoop it and rode it home on the highway for an hour in the rain lol. its an 02 with around 20k miles.

5min after buying the bike before riding it home:

bike came with an gutted erion exhaust, frame sliders, and a few other small things. seemed to run good on the ride home and i could immediatly feel the huge difference in power and throttle response. i loved my f4i for the lot but i stay in the streets 90% of the time and i constantly found myself looking for a 7th gear on the highway or wishing i could be going faster.

got the bike home safe and decided it was time to start ordering parts and making it mine. most of my past bikes have been flashy and bright spray paint color schemes so i decided i want to keep this bike more of an oem+ type of look. always been a big fan of how the 954 looks stock so im going to try to keep it a mix between stock and stunt.

found a used FI cage on ebay for cheap so bought that the same night i got the bike. took the wheels off and painted them white, also added a 10,000k low beam HID and 3k yellow high beams for the hella JDM look.

stock clip ons werent doing it so i threw on some stock 636 clips flipped under the triple. with this setup i am able to run an uncut upper fairing with no banging

gotta have the rsc and my last one was sold with the bike so i copped a new rsc. i kept my Handbrake setup from my f4i so i was able to use the master and 80in line on this bike. Magura 13mm. grips are BMX grips cut down to fit the stock control switch.

finding used stunt parts for this bike is extremely hard so i had to decide between using a tap-in kit or buying brand new caliper bracket...zues hooked me up with a good price so i went with the bracket...hohey dual single-cal.

chain and sprockets were original from 02 and were probably one or two clutch-ups away from breaking into a million pieces so i hit up zues once again and got a full driven sprocket/chain setup. wanted to keep this more of a street bike gearing..i want to be able to hit 160 down the highway but also be able to ride idle (and hopefully fufill my goal of getting circles) so i went stock front size with +4 in the rear. its pretty sick for streets, have no hit lots yet.

so heres how she sat for alil while

action shot

found a second caliper for real cheap on ebay and finally threw that on with my old HEL line to get the HB setup complete

exhaust sounded worse than using a tin can as a muffler because it was completely gutted with no packing so i sold the can on ebay and picked up a brand new in the box scorpian exhaust for like 100 bucks.

was way too long so i took it out of the box and immediatly chopped like 3/4 of it off, shined it up nice and got this:

sounds 100x better...just like a 9 should.

some more action getting used to the HB

real cold weather started rolling through so i decided it was time to start doing the dirty work. although it looked fresh in the pics, the tank had a dent and some scrapes from being dropped so i finally nutted up and said F#ck it yolo and smashed her in.

tip: 954 tanks are not much fun to dent lol.
as you can see the cap did not want to drop down very much, im pretty much bottomed out how it is in the final pic and its not nearly flush which is kind of disappointing...any lower i dont think ill get a drop of gas in. it has a small splash guard but nothing like the big 636 ones..im worried if i cut it out that it will leak. oh well, im not looking to do tank O's, just want a solid dent for street tank tricks hopefully itll do.

got me a roll of that goodgood but havnt used it yet (probly will order a 1in kick too):

and heres where im currently at now. stripped her down in hopes of learning myself some idle control on this beast. i know the old school cats all used to rock these and kill circles so im determined to at least try. i had ss circles pretty much on lock last year on my f4i so im hoping i can get it. only thing is the idle on these bikes supposidly is a major bitch...tends to jump around badly if you raise it over 2k rpm so we'll see. as you can tell by me taking the fairings off (im a FF For Life type of guy), im prepared to eat some shit.

just got this in the mail yesterday so once i get the motivation to go into my 0 degree garage and install it, maybe ill finally crank the idle and nut up and see what i can do

thats all i got for now....i have some plans in my head for this thing that im going to try to carry out by spring time. if it comes out like the picture in my head, this things gonna be a sick full fairing street whip.

parts wise i would love to pick up a nice solid peg subframe, possibly a round bar (have not seen ONE 954 with a round bar ever, i will not rock one if its not possible to keep it super clean with the tail), stabilizer, jbseatz setup, and would also like to switch up my bar setup because im 6'2 and pretty hunched with the under-the-triple setup as you can see in my action pics. maybe some adjustables or something.

lemme know what you think

954rr Street Build - Righteous 1 - 01-27-2013

I gutted my exhaust valve, servo, and airbox flapper......and my idle bounces around. I honestly wish I would've tried it in the lot before the mods. I do believe that you will lose a bit of bottom end, also(not like you need it on these beasts). Try it out stock, first.

954rr Street Build - ny450 - 01-27-2013

thats all i had to hear...im gonna leave it stock for now with just the 2nd idle screw and see what happens. i dont plan on riding lots much i just want the idle for those occasional sesh's..seems like alot of people say that it jumps around if you go any higher than 2-2.4k rpm maybe keeping it at that limit will be enough for simple lot stuff.

954rr Street Build - Righteous 1 - 01-28-2013

Shit....w/ everything modded....I have to run at 4k to keep things stable...

954rr Street Build - da Liks - 01-28-2013

unmodded over here, bonestock except for the +1 rearsprocket. it has enough pull at 2,5K for occasional lot seshes but you have to know what your doing when blipping the throttle.

954rr Street Build - ny450 - 01-29-2013

weather broke alittle bit today (35deg) so i had to get alil bit worked on...started by doing the 2nd idle screw.

900rr screw, trimmed threads to fit and greased. shoudlve went 600rr cable, the 900 is a bit short

nice and easy

noticed this when i pulled the airbox...previous owner shaved down the intake stacks? idk why, never saw that before kinda weird

also another weird thing was when i went to do the clean air mod i had another "huh" moment.

this is the pic from the pic i followed when i did the f4i mod

on my bike, there is no T fitting or stock pcv valve like the f4i....hoses "1" and "2" are just one solid hose running from one side to the other and hose "3" runs to the bottom of the air box....is this normal for the 954?

ran to home depot for some weldwood contact cement...had to cruise top down

tried out some htmoto on the tank....misjudged the size i cut, wanted it to overlap the sides a bit more but its ok...highly considering getting a custom flat top tank done instead...love the look of stock dents but im really not likin how this tank feels so far and like i said im a huge fan of tank tricks. might just bite the bullet.

954rr Street Build - Guiguistunt - 01-30-2013

subscribed ;-) if you need help .... ;-) got exactly the same ,all stuntified :-)

954rr Street Build - ny450 - 01-30-2013

redid the tank today, love it now looks much better imo. think ill order a 1inch kick and see how it is because id love to keep it like this opposed to a flat top

used some leftovers to do the tail too...its the little things that count lol. i plan on reinforcing the backside of the tail to try and prevent cracking since noone makes a tailsaver. also plan on reinforcing the headlight tabs on the front fairing with fiberglass since 2 of them already ripped off when i took the headlight off.

i would never had dented that tank either, but thats just me.

what makes me laugh is other cages still mount to the same motor mount..... so what keeps the other cages from breaking the motor?

bike looks good... love 954's
