0304 636 puffing black smoke - *kingpin* - 09-21-2012

Ok......so I just finished my bike up only to have the oil level start dropping on me So there only seems to be a little bit of leakage from the motor (gaskets and whanot) but it's mostly just a little residual and shouldn't be the problem. I was thinking this could only mean I am burning oil but the smoke coming out of my exhaust is black, not white at all and doesn't really have that burnt oil smell. Idk maybe it is oil which would suck....any ideas? I got my fingers crossed

Black is fuel

That's what I was thinking....I am guessing that is just to much fuel? any ideas what would cause that? and would burning fuel like that give any leads to why it would be dropping oil........... goddamnnnnnn

How is it running.just oil could be valve stem seals or rings ,do a compression test , and check the plugs

You sure you didn't swap your motor for a diesel engine? I kid man.

Black=fuel
White=coolant
white blue tint=oil

Check the plugs and things related to spark delivery. You wouldn't have spilled gas on the exhaust by any chance would ya. I knew a guy who was rebuilding and while he had the can off he had the tank setting right next to it and it leaked some fuel into the muffler that soaked into the packing causing some smoke. But rally doubt you did that, extreme long shot.

But like Gil said, might want to do a comp test. Since you are seeing noticable oil consumption and you don't seem to be loosing much from leaky gaskets might want to check that you aren't burning any off with excessive blow by or something. Might as well check while you are checking the plugs. Just to see.

fuel pressure regulator...?

I'll lose about a quart from riding in about 300 miles especially if I'm on the freeway (moderate gearing 10 up on rear) from blow by and prolly from the kleen air mod as well (mild seepage from some gaskets of course)... Motor's got 46k on it and still running strong just starting to use oil more than it used too... as far as black smoke I got nothing... I get a bit of a white blue puff on hard pickups and quick high rev downshifts... so sorry no opinion on the black smoke issue... kinda weird... someone pranking you by puttin crap in your muffler???

I am thinking this is my problem....I am just gonna keep feeding her oil for the time being and try to narrow down the black smoke (fuel) issue. Another possible factor is that I just moved from a high altitude, warm and dry climate to a sea level, extremely humid and cold climate. I have been running Rotella T6 full synthetic 5w-40....idk if I should change it up for the different climate or not. Also do you think the octane levels could play a factor at such a low alititude?

air/fuel ratio can have an effect at at different altitude

I ran that oil here in TX year round. People don't realize what oil weight ratings mean, 5W @ 0*C and 40W at 100*C. So it will be easier and thinner on start up but being a synthetic you will have better coating on the internals preventing that from being an issue with a cold start. Then as you approach operating temp the oil is just as thick as a 10W40. So don't listen to anyone that says you are doing something wrong, or not to use that oil because it's a "Diesel" oil. It is made to clean a motor so it's good at removing grim from the engine while cycling. Also t's make up rivals the more expensive oils like AMSOIL. So disregard those people and take it from someone who has logged more than 100K miles on motorcycle engines using that stuff, you will be fine. My R6 alone I had ran it for a little over 50K miles while I owned it. Also don't listen to those morons who will want to tell you synthetic oil is bad for your clutch, just isn't true. Again stock clutch on that bike with that oil lasted a little over 40K miles.

Now for the fuel, I always ran 93 since the factory tune is for 91 and these motors are such high compression once you start putting good load on them depending on the environment at the time it is not hard/difficult/unheard of for it to cause pre-detonation as you are approaching the top of the compression stroke. Octane is what's added to fuel to prevent pre-detonation, it raises the flash point. Flashpoint is the temperature which the fuel ignites, the more octane the higher that is. The higher the compression the higher the temperature in the combustion chamber, high compression motors need for a higher octane fuel to have efficient burn and combustion is greater. Not like you needed to know that but fuck it you do now. But predetonation can burn up plugs and in some cases even melt them. Not saying it's your issue but could be or could be contributing. Check the plugs, anything delivering spark or fuel. The altitude change you went from thin air to thick air so fuel mixture should have leaned out while the ECU compensates. Check your plugs hey will rell you if you've been running rich or lean. If you were predetonating though you would more than likely notice the noise coming from the motor sound similar to marbles or something loose in the head. Altitude definitely affects A/F ratio thought I don't think in your scenario it would cause the black smoke, I could be wrong though. Plugs appearance will tell you a lot about how the bike is running since you are uncertain.
