05 06 636 Tank dent - 762SPR - 06-29-2012
I had the tank off today while I was wiring in my second radiator fan, moving my ignition to the air box, and doing the kleen air mod. So I asked myself what the hell why not just dent it now?
I scoured the internet for as many pictures of good ones as I could find and printed them out. There weren't many so I decided if mine turned out OK I would post some good pictures of it... I also heard lots of people complain about how lousy the 05 06 tanks were for denting so I was a little concerned.
I made sure to support the bottom of the tank well with bags of lead shot (sand bags would work, too). I didn't want to put any dents on the bottom or screw up any of the tabs!
Like the stunt bums video, I threw a rag over the cap, and put an aluminum dist over that. Instead of a cinder block, I used a big hammer to whack the disk. It worked really well and I think it gave much more control than a cinder block would have. I made sure to keep it even, and if one side was going in more than another it was easy to correct.
After a few good whacks with the mallet...
This is the inside clearance once it was all smashed down. I don't think I would want to go any farther. As it is, it will probably be a pain to fill.
Here it is all dented up and lightly sanded ready for filler. It hardly even needs any filler though, just a few light passes!
I've never been more happy to not have an ass before! I can really see how this tank wouldn't allow enough dent for some people, but for me it's prefect! I did a few test fits to my posterior and it is super comfy, I even rocked it way back pretty much vertical and was able to stay in it without any grip enhancers. Tomorrow I'll putty it up and hit it with some thick primer until I decide what color to paint it.
