My 2001 F4i electrical gremlin fix - Petarded - 11-22-2010
Long story short my 2001 f4i wouldn't start ... a month and multiple purchases later, I found the problem and wouldn't have had to buy anything... here's the steps I went through hopefully this will help someone in the future with a similar issue.
- Was getting no fuel pump but after hot wiring it... it turned right on.
- No headlights but after testing... they had power but bad ground
- Strangeness... With the brights off... the engine kill switch would turn the brights indicator (on the speedo) on and off.
- Checked all fuses and none were blown
- Researched and saw the ignition switches on the f4i's go bad... so I bought and replaced ignition key switch... still broken.
- Found a whole new wiring harness on ebay (with relays for about the same cost as just purchasing new relays) and before replacing the whole harness I swapped out the relays (there are two in the tail section and one underneath the airbox)... still broken.
- Went to the stunt spot pulled a ECU off a friends bike and swapped it to test ... still broken.
- Decided it was time to replace the harness...
... cranked some tunes in the garage... stripped the bike and started pulling apart the harness. - Pulled apart molex connectors and as I pulled a white molex apart under the airbox a piece of plastic came out...
I inspected it and sure enough connection in that molex was broken and bad ... (Green wire which was a ground). - Soldered the green wire together outside the molex... electrical taped it... FIXT!!!

been there, done that. only i didnt have all the hassle, i just checked all the connectors haha!

electrical problems are so fun!!! it could be anything and there is so much to check. glad you found the problem

yup, mine is like this right now figured it was just a fluke thing but i guess im not the only one with this bullshit.

wiring harnesses are cheap enough now for f4is that i didnt even try to diagnose mine when i started having gremlins, just scooped one up and swapped it out and bike was running perfect in about an hour

to be fair i wasnt counting taking apart and putting back together... i know what you mean, if i do it by myself i takes me forever

electrical problems are always more time consuming that you think. Glad you got it back running right though.
