1988 is OBD I so you wont get but the most basic of information. I think 1988 GM trucks were TBI, and Chevy trucks with single injector TBI were always famous for A/F ratio problems due to clogged or poor spray pattern injector issues. Insert a gauge into the brake booster vacuum line while running to verify vacuum at idle and at wide open throttle, then post your results and I will verify it against alldata's expected range. Also, connect a fuel pressure gauge and record rail pressure with key on, engine off; then record readings again at idle and wide open throttle. Its possible you may have a ripped/dry rotted diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator as well. If you do find a clogged or poor performing injector then remove it, rig a fuel supply line and hot wire and bench flush it thorough with kerosene. If that wont free the deposits you may need a new throttle body injector. If none of these checks yield any verifiable concerns PM me your VIN number and I can search for TSBs as well as more specs for you to check. P.S. on easy check is to disconnect the exhaust at the headers and fire it up. If the hesitation/lack of power is gone then your cat is weak sauce.

What he said...( Fuel Filter) for sure check fuel pressure and flow volume, The flex hose from pump to sending unit tube ( inside the tank)splits on these as well... worse after sitting, way worse if old fuel was oxygenated type ( alcohol added) like we have here in Vegas (Rots rubber in no time) Old TBI systems can be a bitch to diagnose, Willing to bet it is fuel related, But I have seen ignition problems act that way too, Have even seen the pick up magnet in the distributor get weak from age and heat, causing poor running.
My shop also has alldata and mitchell, If you need wiring diagram, specs or something just hollar, I can fax or E-mail it for you.
