Marines DEP - Big Red - 02-28-2012

Taking my asvab tomorrow at MEPS and thursday im taking a full physical and i swear in for the Marines. I'm 18 still in high school as a senior, so I'm going to be in delayed entry. And my recruiter told me I'd be getting sent off to basic training in September if everything goes good for the physical. Now i know there are some fellow marines on these boards, how can i find out when id be getting set off to basic training? Will it be on the contract i sign when i goto MEPS? I just wanna be sure my recruiter is telling me the truth and all. I was kind of looking forward to using this summer as my last summer to have as much fun as i possibly can and see all my friends and family as much as i can before i leave.

Anyways happy to finally get my life on track and serve for the country!

It will say on the contract. Never believe what the recruiter says untill you see it on paper. They only care ab out there quota and will tell you anything to get you in boot camp. You can also walk away at any point if your not happy with your decision untill you get on the plane/bus.

Well arent you considered "discharged" if you try to leave after your sworn in, even if its before basic training, instead of being disqualified? Cause discharged would look worse than disqualified on your record, right? I'm really positive this is what i want to do though anyways.

And okay. Ill be sure to read everything on the contract.

Anything specific to request? Im looking at doing a lot of college work while in the marines to become a pilot. Dont matter heli or fixed wing. As long as i fly my overall goal in life is complete.

Ask your recruiter to go over the contract. It will say the date you are supposed to report to boot camp. Also if you are lookin to fly once your In the marines you need to. BE a college grad and start as an officer. Otherwise you can go through the MECEP program which will send you to college while your in and commission you as an officer upon graduation.

Wha did your recruiter say your MOS was. I am guessing something in the air wing. Personally I am a 6153 ( ch53e airframes mechanic) I know a little bit about the marine corps and the airwing. I have been in for 9 years now.

Good luck in boot camp man. Have fun at the depot.

Tomorrow im going in for asvab testing. So i dont have a MOS yet. Ill be going to MEPS tomorrow after the asvab testing and get my physical done and then swear in.

My recruiter told me my contract would state that I am going to be making an 8 year commitment to the Marines( 4 years active and 4 years reserve). i thought this was kinda weird cause i thought it was 4 years, and youd choose whether you want to be active or reserve.

And yes i plan to take full advantage of college while enlisted in the marines. Still doing my research on the GI bill, tuition assistance from the marines, and marine corps college fund. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated of what routes would be best to take while in the marines.

as far as the 4yr thing, it's a mandatory 4yrs active and 4 inactive reserve....meaning, if there is any reason (shit hits the fan) they can call you back in....ur obligated to go if need be...highly doubt but it does happen every now and then.....as far as the pilot thing, brandon85 is dead on...alot of people think its a job you can just pick, sorry to burst ur bubble, but it's not... you have to be an officer and on top of that, there are about 4 more yrs of just classes and training on top of the 4 u already sign up for....long story short, pilots are usually capt or above, which is about 8yrs at least...and if you do get in, you don't get to pick what you wanna fly...you could fly helo, jet, kc135 (the big cargo mother fucker) or you could even fly a Osprey, which is the worst and scariest POS in the military...lol...just sayin.... if you want to just be on one (don't care if you fly or not), then be a gunner for one, it's an mos that you can pick.....on to the next thing, which is not believing ur recruiter....fuck him and fuck all recruiters...they will say anything, hell, they might even suck ur dick to get you in...make sure you know ur MOS before you do anything or go anywhere...i can't even count how many people went in with open contracts and ended up being a com guy or cook or sum bullshit like that, get it in writing...I did 5yrs in the infantry 0311/0313 (which i picked) in 29 palms CA, and i'm currently going to school and getting paid from the post 9/11 gi bill and it's nice...it's gonna be hard to do school and training at the same time, depending on ur mos...i deployed 3 diff times....granted, there's some down time in Iraq, but everyone spends it watchin porn or stunt vids cuz it's so sporadic....and it sounds like you don't wanna just sit behind a desk so it's prob gonna be diff for you...after the marines, when you enroll into school, they usually take military as credits towards ur degree...i had a buddy that enrolled and they took 16 credits toward school (a whole semester), that's awesome....

sorry this was so long, just tryin to fill you in some things....marines is the best way bro...you'll get a lot out of it...if you have any questions at all, let us know.

oh yea, ur first duty station after ur job school prob won't be in black and white cuz that changes so much...i was slated to go to lejune and it changed when i was walkin on the bus and they took 5 of us and sent us to 29 palms, so don't expect that in writing...shouldn't be a deal breaker anyway

^^^^^^THIS!!!!!! Do not swear in untill you pick and MOS and if you dont score high enough you can retake the ASVAB. And take your time because after you swear in, the time you spend in the DEP comes off your last 4 years of inactive reserve duty.
