Just seeing if anyone has an idea of what this sound is. I'm leaning towards the idler pulley or tennsioner pulley. I will change them and the belt anyway, but just seeing if anyone has any ideas what this sound could be.

Post the clip on e46fantics.com...I never had that problem with my e46 but mine was auto?

I tried e46 fanatics. Mine is automatic as well. I know its not the power steering pump because that needs to be replaced as well because its making some noise and if im turning I can hear both noises at the same time.

All I was hearing was what seemed to be the power steering whining. Kinda hard to diagnose a noise on a video though. I've had people call the shop and have me listen to their bikes over the phone for a diagnostic.

Yea I know its tough. But that whining is what Im talking about but i was going straight there and I know it wasn't the ps pump. And you can see that it kind of makes the noise based on rpm up to about 3k rpm. Im hoping its an idler pulley or tennsioner pulley I have to relieve the tension on the belt to check them but I have to remove the fan clutch first to get to that. I thought maybe it was the alternator starting to go bad, but I tested it with a volt meter and its charging perfectly.

it sound like power steering to me too. i would just start there first before you go throwing money at other parts that prob dont need to be replaced.

I know 100% it is not the power steering pump.

It's most likely power steering. Not only does it sound like that, but it also makes noise when you're driving straight, it just gets worse and sounds a bit different when you turn, thus sounding like two sounds. My buddy's Jeep does it, I can hear him coming down the street. And we've narrowed it down to the power steering. You said your power steering was bad anyway right? So go ahead and get it fixed and if you keep hearing the noise it's something else. But I'm willing to bet it will go away.

I figured since I can hear the two sounds at the same time theres no way it could be the ps pump. I wouldn't think the pump could make two seperate sounds at the same time. And the fact that it gets louder with rpm leads me towards the pulleys. I will pull the belt off tomorrow and check the pulleys.
