Brands to watch out for:
-Taurus (affordable but very problematic for beginners, some guns can't shoot certain rounds and their mechanisms need to be kept very clean)
-Ruger (they make great rifles, but make overpriced, ugly, awkward handguns)
I recommend a .22 or 9mm for target practice because the rounds are cheaper than 10mm, .40 S&W, .45, .380 etc
but if you buy .22 you better not need that gun for anything but target practice.

Typically a longer barrel equals better accuracy and that follows true to a point, but quality also comes into play. I've had a ruger .45 with a 5" barrel and compared it to my Taurus PT145SS with a 3" barrel and my Taurus groups tighter, but the quality comparison isn't even close!
I've had great luck with Taurus handguns, but Kimber, Colt, Kahr, Sig, Beretta, and Glock are all great options as well. Most any 1911 is a good option as well.

yea 1911s are sweet i personally own two i have the para ordnance with the double stack high cap wich is fun but sucks for carrying its 14 + 1 and i also have a kimber 1911

XD's are sweet. I have two. a 40 subcompact for carry..And a full size 45. and bout a hundred bucks cheaper than Glocks... Witch I have nothing Against Personally.. Ther good guns, just a lil pricey.But the glock and XD are Real similar.. Depends on how much money you want to spend.. You could get a really nice piece for 4-5 or even 500-1000.. you want a REAL Comp Shooter Google Tanfoglio pistols...My buddy makes parts for one of there sponsored shooters...There fuckin Baller....REALLY pricey though

O and his pistols for comp are one frame with interchangeable barrels.. So one pistol is a 9, 357, 40, 45 etc..

and i saw another person post something about Taurus.... ive personally never had one problem out of mine. ive got a Taurus 1911 and its been great and used to have a taurus 909 9mm witch i dont think i ever cleaned and it never jammed??? just like any gun. you keep them clean and they will treat you good. even though high point are cheap guns if its your first its not a bad gun. their cheap. if you tear it up..... so what it only costs about 100 bucks. if your only wanting to throw a bunch of lead down range i wouldnt recommend a $1000 pistol as your first. once you go around the ranges just look at what other ppl are shooting and ask questions. 9mm is deff best for gun ranges because its not going to break the bank in just ammo. i remember being able to get a box of 20 7.62 rounds for my sks around 5 bucks. now its almost 35 bucks a box!!!
